Good navigational functionality, value-adding features, and budget-friendly pricing – this is what the TomTom GO Supreme series offers, the best of both worlds.

I have reviewed and personally used several vehicle GPS navigators from key market players like TomTom and Garmin. They have been my trusted companion on road trips across the country.

The TomTom GO Supreme 6 is the bigger device in the series with a 6-inch display.

It provides the latest world maps and software updates, which you can download with its built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

Some of its other notable features include last-mile navigation, hands-free calling, talking to Siri and Google Now, safety cameras, and support for multiple languages.

Being a mid-priced product, the GO Supreme 6 performs well and provides value for money. Its battery life is on the shorter side. Its voice control features need improvement.

I have tested the navigator on busy city roads and also on my road trips, cruising on the highway and some bumpy roads, which I would have preferred avoiding.

The article will take you through the navigator’s design and features and my experience of setting up and using the device.

About TomTom GO Supreme 6

TomTom is a brand with over 30 years of experience in the navigational space. TomTom uses its own maps platform to guide and support users in over 200 countries and territories.

Its product line includes GPS navigation devices for cars, motorcycles, large vehicles, and in-dash navigation. In addition, it offers navigational apps like the GO Navigation app, AmiGO, and the GO Ride app.

TomTom Traffic, speed camera updates, and MyDrive are the popular TomTom services. Depending on the navigation device, these services could be accessed through your smartphone, or the device will include a SIM and data.

Who is The TomTom GO Supreme 6 For?

Who is The TomTom GO Supreme 6 For

The GO Supreme device is for users looking to make everyday travel easier. It is also for users planning road trips across the country.

If you tend to travel for work within the city, the device can help you with live traffic updates. You can receive guidance instructions from your parked car to your intended destination. Further, you can use the ‘Find my car’ feature to know where you parked your car.

As the device supports hands-free calling, you can make and receive calls without taking your hand off the steering wheel.

If driving around the country is your ideal vacation getaway, the TomTom Road Trips feature can come in handy. It includes a collection of beautiful coastal, mountain, forest, and holiday routes.

5 Important Factors I Tested on The Product

The GO Supreme device offers a good balance between navigational guidance and user-friendly features. As a result, it can be a good tool for everyday commutes or long road trips.

Let us understand how the device fares in terms of features and performance.

1. Design

Design

Most TomTom car navigation devices fall under the 5 to 7-inch display size. The GO Supreme 6 has a 6-inch display screen. The device dimensions are 6.37 x 4.15 x 0.74 inches. The device is not too small or big but conveniently sized to be placed on your windshield.

The device is a relatively new model, but its display resolution needs to keep up with today’s standards. The device has an 800 x 480-pixel resolution. This resolution works well for map views. The imagery is pretty decent. But the display quality can get poor in guidance view where you can see 3D buildings.

The device comes with a magnetic mount. A car charger, USB cable, and documentation are the other items included in the box.

2. Battery

The GO Supreme device comes with a lithium-ion battery. Its battery life can last up to an hour. This, though, depends on your device usage and settings. Moreover, the battery takes about 3 to 5 hours to get a full charge.

It would be best to plug the device into the car charger when driving. Ensure you use the charger and the USB cable provided by TomTom. Using third-party charging accessories may not provide sufficient power to the device.

Also, for GO Supreme devices, TomTom recommends you keep the screen brightness at 50%, volume at 30%, and the battery saving preference on.

3. Usability

Usability

You can use the quick search or step-by-step search methods to look up places and addresses on the device. You can use any method you prefer, as both give the same guidance results.

With the quick search, you can enter a point of interest, half address, a restaurant name, or search for a particular service, like a gas station near me. The device will generate possible street names and places that are the closest matches.

You can also use voice control to use navigation features and manage settings on your device. For example, you can wake the device by saying, “Hello, TomTom.”

Alternatively, you can set a customized phrase of your own to wake up the device.

You can use plenty of commands, like “clear route,” “go to a gas station,” “when will I get there,” and more. The voice control feature is helpful but can be inconsistent with its performance.

In terms of spoken instructions, the device supports multiple languages like English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, and more.

The GO Supreme device is easy to use, but it has a learning curve to it.

4. Performance

TomTom Traffic is a service that provides you with real-time traffic information. You can get details like roadblocks, closed lanes, and traffic accidents. You must be connected to the internet via your smartphone to receive updates.

The information provided by the navigator is more or less accurate in my experience. But there have been cases where the device does not receive traffic updates even when connected to the smartphone. So the feature works, but it misses the spot in some regions.

You can look up places, add stops, and plan a route. These routes could be the ones you take to work or to a vacation destination, with scenic spots and tourist attractions added as stops.

Under POIs, you can find categories like food, accommodation, emergency, car-related, leisure, and more. It is a comprehensive database, but it can be a bit hit-and-miss.

5. Features

Features

TomTom devices typically focus on navigational excellence. But the GO Supreme device also offers a host of user-friendly features. This puts the product on par with its competitors like the Garmin Drive and DriveSmart series.

Once you connect your smartphone to the navigation device, you can make and receive calls hands-free. When you receive an incoming call, you can answer the call, reply via SMS (for Android users only), or reject the call.

You can use voice control and say, “Hello, TomTom,” “Activate phone,” and “Call XYZ” to make a call. Alternatively, you can select the phone button on the navigation screen.

If you want to let your loved one or the person you are meeting know where you are, you can do so by sharing your location and ETA.

Add the contacts to the shortlist before you start driving. Then from the quick menu, you can select ‘Send location and arrival info.’ In the case of an unplanned route, the SMS will only include your current location.

The TomTom safety cameras feature warns you about fixed and mobile safety cameras, speed trap locations and hotspots, traffic restrictions, and speed enforcement zones.

Please note the feature is available only in select regions as some countries like Germany and Switzerland do not permit the use of such services.

What Sets The Product Apart From Its Competitors?

All destinations are not reachable by car. In other cases, you may have to park your car away from your intended destination. In such cases, GO Supreme’s last-mile navigation feature can help.

You will need the MyDrive app to use this feature. Once you park your car, the app will mark the parked location as a point of interest. Then it will present a prompt asking if you would like to continue the route on foot. When you select yes, you will be guided to your destination.

Please note the feature automatically works when you are in the 250 m to 2 km range. If the distance exceeds the range, you will manually have to set the parking location as a point of interest.

While returning, you can use the point of interest to find your parked car location.

The GO Supreme device offers support for Siri and Google Now. You can use the personal assistance feature and use your smartphone without digging for your phone in the bag or removing your eyes from the road.
